This compact garage apartment sits above an existing garage and measures approximately 575 square feet. The renovation was completed with investor ownership and short term rental use in mind. Its small size was an advantage. A smaller home allows for quicker guest turnover, simpler upkeep, and easier climate control.
Improving the Layout
While the size worked well for Airbnb use, the original layout did not. The kitchen was limited in function. A full size refrigerator along the entry wall created awkward sightlines and visually blocked the space upon arrival. There was no dishwasher, and the cabinetry offered minimal storage. There was also no designated dining area. The only bathroom was accessed through the bedroom, forcing guests to walk around the bed to use it. This arrangement would not work well for most guests staying together.
How We Did It
A new bathroom entry was created from the main living area, and the original bedroom access was closed off. The vanity was relocated to the former doorway wall, creating space for the new entry. A small storage shelf was added along the side of the bed to improve everyday use. In the kitchen, Euro style cabinetry with large drawers and open storage replaced the original units. A full height refrigerator was exchanged for an under counter model, freeing space for a dedicated dining area. The layout now accommodates a full size range, dishwasher, and microwave while still allowing room for a table and chairs.
But I Hate Tiny Refrigerators
We thought of that too. We did get some pushback on removing the full size refrigerator upstairs, but it needed to go to make the layout work. For overnight stays, the under counter refrigerator is plenty. The unfinished garage space below the apartment housed utilities such as the hot water heater and well equipment. It was insulated and partially finished to accommodate laundry facilities. We were also able to create additional counter space and storage by repurposing a section of original kitchen cabinets and adding a full size refrigerator. This allowed the main apartment to remain uncluttered while still supporting longer stays. Guests staying for weeks also seemed to like the garage setup, and it worked out well in real use.
Extending the Living Space Outdoors
The rear deck off the bedroom was cleaned, repaired, and restored. It now functions as an outdoor extension of the apartment, offering woodland views and a quiet place for guests to relax.
Feels Like Home
Finishes were selected to balance familiarity and personality. Bright primary colors add energy to the compact rooms. An eclectic mix of art and comfortable objects makes The Little House feel fun but also like staying in a cozy home rather than an impersonal hotel.
Outcome
The Little House demonstrates how small spaces can be transformed through thoughtful reconfiguration. By improving circulation, privacy, and daily use, the project turns a modest garage apartment into a highly functional and inviting place to stay.
