Old Homes Work Differently

When planning a historic renovation project, it is important for the design and build team to have knowledge and experience with historic properties.

Often a renovation includes retrofit mechanical systems or weatherization upgrades to make the home more comfortable for modern living. If older construction methods and materials are not taken into consideration, new problems can occur, such as mold and trapped moisture.

Not Everything Should Be Replaced

A full restoration can feel overwhelming. It is not always clear what should be preserved and what must be replaced. Original features are often irreplaceable or made from materials not available today. Historic windows can often be restored. Original plaster walls do not automatically need to be replaced with drywall. Imperfections and patina do not have to be erased—they are part of the home’s character.
